Jo-An FrancesThomas learned at an early age to appreciate a variety of different cultures and the arts. In 1985, she traveled to Hong Kong, China, and Japan, where she became fascinated with the art of the Orient. In 1986, Frances resumed her art career at the Cohasset, MA, South Shore Art Center, where she took courses in Oriental Brush painting with Ellee Avakian and found her medium.
I create watercolor and ink paintings inspired by nature’s quiet moments. Drawing from Chinese brush painting and sumi-e, I use soft color, expressive line, and negative space to capture birds, flowers, bamboo, and other living forms. My paintings are meant to bring calm, elegance, and a sense of connection to the natural world.
